The story of a passionate first love and a mysterious disappearance. . .Set in the magical region of Cornwall before mechanised farming. When young Jake is left on a train with his packet of sandwiches he finds himself sitting next to a surly couple and a fat man.Speeding towards Cornwall he is surprised to see an overturned train lying on its side like a wounded dinosaur.Due to the war Jake is being sent away to stay with his eccentric Aunt Dolly who dresses up like a fruit bat. He finds himself on a traditional mixed farm with the glorious appeal of Cornish rural life where the community is unchanged and rooted in ancient ways - like the lost domain of happiness. There he makes hay,but is forced to attend the local school where Miss Davies beats everyone regularly,or tries to.His beautiful cousin Antonia is only two years older than him but that seems to be a lifetime - until he rescues her. Then he gets his blissful reward.Like the goddesS Aphrodite, she deflowers him and leaves his remains to mortal women.
But why does Antonio disappear? Could she have absconded with a deserter? Or could something sinister have happened? Aunt Dolly whisks Jake off to the top floor of her new house while she runs gambling parties downstairs. But Jake is haunted by the mystery of Antonia's disappearance and the sexual magic they once shared.
